As you embark on this beautiful journey toward your wedding day, one of the most crucial aspects to consider is your budget. Planning a wedding can be exciting, but it can also be overwhelming without a clear financial plan. Here’s a thoughtful guide to help you budget for your special day while honoring your values as a Catholic couple.
1. Start with a Conversation
Before diving into numbers, sit down together and discuss your financial situation. Share your thoughts on what you envision for your wedding day and how much you can realistically allocate to various aspects of the celebration. Open communication is key! While lights and streamers for your reception sound amazing, it may not be your top priority once you sit down together!!
2. Set Your Priorities
Identify what matters most to both of you. Is it the venue, the food, the photography, or perhaps incorporating specific traditions? Knowing your priorities will help guide your spending and ensure you invest in areas that are meaningful to you.
3. Create a Budget Breakdown
Once you have your priorities in place, create a budget breakdown. A typical wedding budget might include categories such as:
>Venue and Catering
>Photography and Videography
>Attire (Dress, Suit, Accessories)
>Flowers and Decor
>Music and Entertainment
>Invitations and Stationery
>Officiant Fees
>Marriage Preparation Course Fees
Adjust the categories to fit your specific needs and preferences.
4. Consider Financial Assistance
Discuss if family members will contribute to the wedding costs. It’s common for parents to offer support, especially in Catholic families. If this is part of your plan, be sure to communicate openly about expectations and contributions. Keep an open mind and make sure to express your gratitude for those that are able to assist you!
5. Research Costs
Spend time researching average costs for vendors in your area. Websites, bridal shows, and referrals from friends can provide valuable insights. Understanding the local market will help you make informed decisions and avoid overspending. In every market, there are highs and lows. Chances are that even a budget wedding can still provide good photography, cake, and other wonderful parts of your day!
6. Build a Contingency Fund
It’s wise to set aside an additional 10-15% of your budget as a contingency fund. Unexpected expenses can arise, and having this buffer will give you peace of mind as your wedding day approaches.
7. Explore Cost-Saving Options
Look for creative ways to save money while still creating a beautiful celebration. Consider:
>DIY Projects: Handmade invitations, centerpieces, or decorations can add a personal touch and reduce costs.
>Off-Peak Dates: Choosing a wedding date during the off-peak season or on a weekday can lead to significant savings when possible for you!
>Simplified Menus: Offering a simpler meal option or a buffet can help keep catering costs down.
A personal note to this last one is that Grace and I actually had tacos as our meal as well as a closed bar. While both of these decisions could see, controversial for some, this was ultimately a great decision all around. We determined that the cost of an open bar wasn’t worth it and that tacos were likely going to be our preferred meal anyways and both of these things led to significant cost savings!
8. Invest in Photography
Remember that photography is an investment in capturing the memories of your special day. When budgeting, prioritize finding a photographer who understands the significance of your Catholic faith and can beautifully document your celebration. There are plenty of reasons why but one example is that you want a photographer who understands that the altar and Chancel are not just a “stage” within walls. These spaces have significance in their design oriented towards worship! A Catholic photographer, such as Grace or myself, understand the significance and get to actively participate in the liturgy with you making our work that much more meaningful!
9. Review and Adjust
Regularly review your budget as planning progresses. As you book vendors and make decisions, update your budget to reflect any changes. This will help you stay on track and avoid last-minute surprises. It’s also worth noting that you will likely need to make final deposits before the big day. I recommend making all final payments even as much as one month in advance so that you have nothing monetarily to worry about going into your wedding. As a caveat, however, make sure to ask all of your vendors about potential payment plans if that’s something you need!
10. Enjoy the Process
While budgeting can feel daunting, remember that this process is part of your journey together. Take time to enjoy the planning and celebrate your love as you prepare for your wedding day. Afterall, this is so much more than a wedding and is about marriage and your love together. This is merely a glimpse into the wonderful partnership that marriage is as you begin and take on life together!
